Designing complex factory systems with innovative, adaptable technologies

Factory planning and production management

The field of production management and factory planning deals with the increasingly complex challenges in the design of production systems and networks. Research in this field focuses on the development of innovative solutions for the digitalization and automation of factories and the design of associated planning tools. The potential applications of technological enablers such as digital twins, driverless transport systems, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology for the management of complex value creation systems are investigated.

Current trends

The planning and operation of factories is becoming a recurring task and must always be adapted to the complex environment. The success of future factories requires the consideration of sustainability, digitalization and resilience. The combined use of innovative key technologies, such as blockchain technology, artificial intelligence and autonomous transport systems, as well as virtualization concepts such as the digital twin and mixed reality, are taking factory planning to a new level. In the target image of an adaption-intelligent factory, management concepts must be developed that involve players from different specialist areas. Factory planning is becoming an increasingly interdisciplinary task. At the same time, a consistent understanding is required along all planning levels, starting from the store floor, through the site to entire production networks.

Orientation and research focus

  • Designing digital twins as assistance systems, taking into account financial aspects, in particular working capital
  • Automated generation of algorithms using large-language models (e.g. in an intralogistics context)
  • Analysis of the potential of autonomous transport systems for mapping supply chain processes across company boundaries, with special consideration of digital twins for simulating the main flows of the supply chain
  • Use and implementation of key technologies to build and maintain inter-organizational trust in industrial value networks
